C.C Development Chart

Cute Caterpillar Development Chart

Every child who attends Stepping Stones Nursery is observed regularly by their key-workers using the development chart below to monitor milestones and development. These guidelines have been taken from the Early Years Foundation Stage Tracker Books. Forms are updated regularly so below is just an example.

PHYSICAL    
Holds pen or crayon using whole hand    
Attempts to feed themselves    
Enjoys sensory experiences e.g. mark making in sand    
Beginning to balance blocks to make a small tower    

 

PERSONAL, SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL    
Builds relationships with special people    
Enjoys finding own nose, eyes or tummy as part of naming games    
Growing ability to soothe themselves and may use a comfort object    
Beginning to understand ‘yes’ or ‘no’ and some boundaries    
Plays co-operatively with a familiar adult e.g. roll a ball back and forth    

 

COMMUNICATION AND LANGUAGE    
Moves whole body to sound they enjoy such as music or a beat    
Concentrates intently on an object/activity of own choosing for short periods    
Can put two or more words together to form a simple sentence    
Frequently imitates words or sounds    
Understands simple sentences e.g. ‘Throw the ball’    

 

LITERACY AND MATHEMATICS    
Handles books and printed materials with interest    
Has favourite rhymes and books    
Develops awareness of numbers – can count 1-5    
Has an understanding that things exist even when out of sight e.g. peek-a-boo    
Recognises big and small things    
Enjoys simple puzzles independantly    

 

UNDERSTANDING THE WORLD    
Closely observe what animals, people and vehicles do    
Recognises simple shapes    
Knows that objects can be used for different things e.g. a ball can be kicked, rolled, thrown etc    
FLASH CARDS – recognises pictures    
Remember where objects belong    
Matches parts of objects that fit together e.g. put a lid on a teapot, assemble a train track
